Is It Cake?

​Is it Cake? is an interactive installation by Jasneet Pritam in the Contemporary Calgary Grotto featuring two three-dimensional sculptures alongside puzzle pieces that visitors are invited to pick up, rearrange, and play with. Inspired by the viral "Is it Cake?" videos, where everyday objects turn out to be something else entirely, the pieces play with material, sound, and shape in ways that might catch you off guard. The work tunes into something we tend to overlook once people grow up: the need for play. Kids get playgrounds, daycares, parks. Adults get lobbies and waiting rooms. This installation is both a playful object and a small act of speculation about what it could look like if we actually designed space for adults to engage in open-ended, low-stakes sensory experience. Whether someone finds it meditative, confusing, fun, or just a nice excuse to use their hands for a bit, the goal is to attune people to a rhythm that's always been there, one we just stopped making room for.
