​About the event:

​Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a global celebration held every year on the third Saturday of September. It’s a day dedicated to sharing the values of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)- openness, collaboration, and community. Around the world, local groups mark the occasion with workshops, talks, and activities that bring people closer to the spirit of software freedom.

​In Nepal, Software Freedom Day has been celebrated for over two decades, with the Nepal Open Source Klub (NOSK) at the heart of the movement. NOSK has long championed free software and open knowledge, and each year the event has grown as more students, developers, and communities come together.

​For 2025, we’re celebrating Software Freedom Day – Nepal Virtual Edition. This year’s program includes community talks, beginner-friendly sessions on starting with open source, careers and community process and a hands-on VS Code Dev Day workshops (AI enabled coding as bonus). The event is open to everyone, whether you’re just starting to explore open source or have been contributing for years.

​Join us online to learn, share, and connect with others who believe in a freer, more collaborative world of technology. All you need is your laptop and curiosity.

👋 11:00 – 11:15 — Check-in & Welcome: Kick off Software Freedom Day and get ready for the sessions ahead.

​🎤 11:15 – 11:45 — Keynote Sesssion by Jurgen Gaeremyn, a Board Member of the Digital Freedom Foundation (DFF)

​📘 11:45 – 12:15 — Guide to Contributing in Open Source by Damodar Lohani: A practical session to help you make your first or impact lasting contributions as a student, developer or professional.

​💻 12:15 – 01:50 — VS Code Dev Day Workshop: Hands-on with GitHub Copilot and AI-powered coding in VS Code an Open Source code editor.

​🧑‍🤝‍🧑 01:50 – 02:30 — Open Source & Community by Rashika Karki: Discover how communities foster collaboration and innovation.

​📣 02:30 – 03:00 — Wrap-up & Networking: Closing remarks and space to connect virtually with participants.
