Research Saturday Week 10: Swahili Thinking Dataset

​This week at Research Saturday, we will review the Swahili Thinking Dataset, a dataset developed to evaluate reasoning and chain of thought capabilities in Swahili. The dataset challenges the assumption that advanced reasoning benchmarks must exist only in high resource languages and offers a practical step toward evaluating cognitive depth in African language models.

​Our discussion will focus on why reasoning datasets matter, what it means to test structured thinking in Swahili and how this work contributes to building more capable and culturally grounded African language AI systems.
