Digital Safety Essentials for Movements
Liminal Works – a Los Angeles based grassroots nonprofit - is offering an essential training in digital health and safety for movements and communities under threat. Digital Safety Essentials will focus on the needs of individuals, communities, and groups who don't have access to enterprise security solutions. Stronger practices in digital health and safety improve our personal, community, and civic lives. The trainings is offered on a sliding scale (see guidance below) and no person will be turned away for lack of funds.
Training details:
This training is designed for active, aspiring, or allied community/movement members who are vulnerable to safety threats or working in targeted organizing environments. Those who use personal devices for their community or movement work are especially vulnerable to digital surveillance, reconnaissance, and threats.
Participants will leave the training with an understanding of the dynamics that determine digital risk, and the essential actions and best practices to more effectively manage exposure and protect personal data. From understanding basics of internet safety, to getting the most out of Signal, understanding VPNs, and common sources of digital exposure; participants will leave equipped to protect themselves and their communities through stronger digital practices and improved digital health.
To get the most out of this training, we highly suggest attending with a friend, colleague, or partner to build a community of practice after the session.
Digital Safety Essentials is offered on a recurring biweekly basis from April through June of 2026, with six sessions offered in English and four offered in Spanish.
Access and Safety Information
Format: Trainings are live with Liminal Works staff + volunteers and will be 60 minutes long and hosted over Zoom.
Zoom terms: All AI features have been disabled for this event, and AI note-takers will not be permitted entry. If you have access to a computer or laptop, we encourage you to join the training by computer so you can see the materials with more ease.
Post –training materials: Participants will receive a recording of the training after the event. The recording will be available for 7 days after each training.
Tech and access support: A tech and access support person will be present throughout the training to attend to participant needs regarding Zoom and access.
Safety: Personal information including your name and email will not be shared with any of the other participants and we welcome participants to join under a pseudonym or first-name only.
Sliding Scale
In an effort to make ongoing trainings sustainable for our grassroots org, we’re offering a sliding scale with rates varying on you or your organization’s financial situation.
Solidarity - $25: Consider this rate if structural oppression limits access to wealth or savings opportunities beyond meeting month-to-month needs.
At-cost - $75: Consider this rate if you are economically empowered/advantaged, are a patron to movements or have access to institutional funds (training reimbursement) from your employer for this program.
Above-and-beyond: Additional contributions to the sustainability of this program and our organization are best received as donations through our website. We also welcome sponsors to cover the cost of attendance for interested groups. Contact [email protected]
Honor-based grants: Contact [email protected] if financial hardship is preventing you from accessing tools to protect your digital health and safety. Provide your name, a simple request for accommodation, and desired session date to receive registry. Please allow at least 24 hours notice before your desired session. We offer this on an honor-based system and ask kindly for others to not abuse it. We encourage those seeking discounts from us while paying for premium corporate tech subscriptions to chose divestment before requesting accommodations from our community. This training will help you identify areas for divestment that will promote also you and your community's safety.
