About the Book:
Feminist Making, Doing & Sensing: Experiments in Philosophy is a co-edited collection, published by Duke University Press in 2026, that invites play, creative expression and various somatic practices into the terrain of philosophy. The book includes chapters that engage mixtapes, performance art, instruction scores, knitting, filmmaking, scribbling, and many more modes of making/thinking. The book makes the case — in part through intersections with Black studies, trans studies, crip studies, research-creation, feminist science studies, and transdisciplinarity more broadly— for the vital import of voices, practices, and arts-based projects that overturn and interrupt the exclusions of disciplinary gatekeeping.
About the Presenters:
Ada Jaarsma is a professor of philosophy at Mount Royal University in Calgary (Treaty 7 Territory), Canada. She is the author of Kierkegaard After the Genome: Science, Existence, and Belief in this World (2017), a coeditor of Dissonant Methods: Undoing Discipline in the Humanities Classroom (2020), and the author of articles in Hypatia, Constellations, Studies in Philosophy and Education, Aeon, and Disability Studies Quarterly. Her making practices include the crafting of philosopher-portraits, audio essays, and pedagogies that foreground creative and collaborative bodymind inquiry.
Lauren Guilmette is an associate professor of philosophy at Elon University, where she teaches and works in continental philosophy, feminist and queer theory, ethics, and environmental studies. She has published in journals such as Symposium, Journal of Speculative Philosophy, philoSOPHIA, and differences, and authored chapters in 50 Concepts for a Critical Phenomenology (2019) and The Disability Bioethics Reader (2022), among other volumes. She is working on an intellectual biography of Teresa Brennan, which will ideally take the form of a graphic novel. Lately she is fascinated by the study of attention and experimental and arts-based methods for cultivating it.
Eva-Marie Stern is a psychotherapist, art therapist, and medical educator. She is a founder of WRAP and the Trauma Therapy Program at Women's College Hospital, Toronto, where she learned and taught for more than twenty years. She designed and leads the Art Is Patient seminar series for students at the University of Toronto, which combines trauma therapy insights with guided interactions in an art museum to generate medically relevant relational learning for health professions students.
