The Return of Systems Thinking and Service Design
The problems we’re designing for are getting bigger, messier and more interconnected. As service designers, we’re increasingly being asked to look beyond individual touchpoints, users, understand the wider systems, organisations, ecosystems and behaviours that shape the services we experience.
The Return of Systems Thinking and Service Design brings together three practitioners exploring what it means to take a systems lens to our work and how we can make that thinking practical.
Meet our speakers:
Olivia Holbrook - Senior Service Designer @ Version 1
Talk synopsis - Recently, there has been a change in the types of problems we are being asked to solve in our roles as designers. The challenges we face seem more complex and interconnected than ever. Pulling examples from previous projects, this talk will focus on how we bring a systems lens to our work by discussing ‘the missing first diamond’ in the double diamond model, and other practical tools for taking a user centred systems approach.
Ruth Baughan - Service Design Lead @ Boots
Talk synopsis: A brief history of loyalty cards and the legacy they leave behind.
Jaskiran Kang - Head of Service and Organisation Design @ TPXimpact
Talk synopsis: Jas will share Orchestra-inspired ecosystem maps to help teams visualise and achieve whole-service outcomes. Tackling complex, sector-wide challenges requires a connected community working across silos, departments, and organisations. Jas will explain her process so others can adapt, reuse, and scale these tools. With the intent to foster cross-sector alignment to chip away at our biggest shared problems together.
