Civic Coffee Hour: Protecting Norwalk's green spaces, w/Aspetuck Land Trust's Matt Kuroghlian

​This month we're excited to welcome Matt Kuroghlian, who leads conservation and outreach for Norwalk at the Aspetuck Land Trust.

​Last fall, the Norwalk Land Trust merged into Aspetuck, one of Connecticut's largest regional conservation organizations, founded in 1963 with about nine full-time staff and decades of stewardship behind it. That means Norwalk's 33 protected nature properties, roughly 110 acres in all, now have real professional muscle behind them, overseen by a local advisory committee.

​Matt is part of that team. He looks after those 110 acres, runs the Farm Creek Education Program that introduces hundreds of Norwalk fourth graders to the ecology of the Rowayton salt marsh every year, and is helping plant Norwalk's first micro forest, a 5,500 square foot pocket forest taking shape at Meadow Street Park in South Norwalk. He'll also talk about Aspetuck's Green Corridor vision, a plan to stitch our scattered patches of habitat into one connected landscape for birds, pollinators, and people.

​Matt and I also serve together on the city's Sustainability and Resilience Task Force, where he heads up the Natural Resources subcommittee. He'll share what that group is working on and how residents can plug in.
