About Event

This event is part of a 6 month series exploring the role of fire on the landscape around the Salish Sea, hosted by scientists, firefighters, ecologists, foresters and cultural burners - including site visits, film screenings, and hands on activities.

Join us as we walk through the 2025 Bear Gulch fire scar in the Olympic mountains, exploring the effects of wildfire firsthand. Led by wildland firefighters, this trip will be an engaging start to our winter fire ecology series, as we get on-the-ground experience about wildfire. Bring your hiking shoes! We will walk several miles on gravel roads and trails along the North Fork Skokomish River.

Please bring good walking shoes, layers (it may be raining), a day pack with plenty of water and snacks for a picnic lunch. We will meet at the Bear Gulch Picnic Site on Hwy 119 along Lake Cushman. If you would like to carpool we will meet at the Quilcene Community Center at 9 AM day and head out together by 9:15.

Accessibility:

We walking through a post burn site on mostly flat gravel roads. The closest indoor bathroom and amenities are 1/2 hour away in Hoodsport.

Instructor Bio:
