About Event

Join artist Whitney McVeigh in conversation with writer Henry Broome and gallerist Alexander Caspari to discuss her new book Paths Converge: Infinite Strange Shapes.

Published by Sylph Editions, the book contains three decades of the artist's transcribed notebooks, journals and letters, as well as drawings and photographs. Woven through the pages are hints of the past and an account of the building of a library that took ten years.

The conversation will reflect on artists who write, writing as a way to think through art and curating across form. A limited number of books will be available to purchase.

Sharing the same title as her new book, Whitney McVeigh's current solo exhibition at Encounter will run until 1st August 2026. Open Wednesday-Saturday 12-19h and by appointment, @ Encounter, Rua de São Bernardo 15, R/C, 1200-823, Estrela, Lisbon.

Whitney McVeigh (b. New York, 1968) is a contemporary artist who has been writing as part of her practice for the last 30 years. McVeigh has travelled extensively and has held residencies around the world, including in Japan, China, India, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa, where she developed the body of paintings Archaeology of Memory. Her library installation 'Divine Rules' was displayed at the Getty Villa in Los Angeles in 2018 and other prominent installations and exhibitions have featured at The Royal Academy (London), Kettle's Yard (Cambridge), Nirox Foundation (South Africa) and Gervasuti Foundation (Venice). McVeigh was born in New York and is now building a studio space dedicated to memory and archive in Southern France.

Henry Broome is a writer and critic from London with bylines in BOMB MagazineArt Monthly, and Flash Art. He writes about the poetics of cityscapes, abandoning inhibition, and the way desire shifts perspective. He is the current Well Read writer-in-residence.

Alexander Caspari founded Encounter in 2014 and has directed the gallery for the past twelve years, establishing the space in Lisbon in 2022. Specializing in post-war and contemporary art, he has curated over sixty contemporary art exhibitions with leading international established and emerging artists in private, public, and institutional venues.
