SISC: Productive Disagreement
PRODUCTIVE DISAGREEMENT
Led by Carmen Perez and Genevieve Smith
There are times in social impact work when it feels harder than it should be, when we either perceive an unfairness or may ourselves be perceived as unfair. When we want to disagree with someone, but we’re afraid of burning a bridge. When an inappropriate word is used, or a glaring bias feels like it goes uncontested. When the problem seems obvious, but everyone prefers their own solution. Frustration, pulling back, loss of trust... all start to creep in, and the work slows down or stops.
How can we defuse moments like this, or maybe even rewire them? Can we prepare in advance? Are there "in case of emergency, do this" tools? Is it possible to perhaps use the conflict to uncover an even better way forward?
Let's find out, together! (Hint: There’s a specific practice literally named “Generative Conflict”)
Genevieve Smith is a justice-oriented facilitator & consultant helping orgs answer Big Questions and get unstuck. Definitely do not ask her about Godzilla.
Carmen Perez is an impact sector renaissance woman with 20 years of experience in the business of change. Definitely do ask her about her situationship with Excel.
