​Understanding that your business has emissions is one thing — actually measuring them is another.

​This hands-on session walks North Carolina businesses and professionals through the practical mechanics of building a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, using the same framework followed by companies of all sizes: the GHG Protocol.

​We'll cover how to set organizational and operational boundaries, distinguish direct (Scope 1) from indirect (Scope 2 and 3) emissions, identify and collect the right activity data, and apply emissions factors and global warming potential (GWP) to calculate your carbon footprint — including a worked example you can follow along with. We'll close by looking at how to set realistic reduction goals and estimate the impact of a sustainability initiative (like adding solar) on your bottom-line emissions number.

​This session is designed for professionals who want to move beyond "why measure emissions" to "how do I actually do it." No prior technical background required, just a willingness to work through a real calculation together.

​Speaker

​Dr. Olga Hawn is Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, Faculty Director of Ackerman Center for Excellence in Sustainability and Sustainability Distinguished Fellow at the Kenan-Flagler Business School, UNC Chapel Hill. She earned her PhD from Duke University. Her research interests include corporate social responsibility, sustainability strategy, and international business. She teaches sustainability strategy and global immersion in sustainability and social enterprise for MBAs.
