AI2Future Zero Day: To Pace or Not to Pace the Frontier: Hamlet Meets AGI
On 12 September 2026, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published “We Must Pace the Frontier”, calling on the AI industry to deliberately slow the pace at which frontier models gain new capabilities. Within days, Sam Altman, Demis Hassabis and Elon Musk endorsed the call. For the first time, the companies leading the race are asking to slow down.
Is pacing the frontier a responsible answer to real risks such as loss of control, cyberattacks and bioterrorism, or a convenient way for incumbents to lock in their lead and keep challengers out? Can a slowdown work without China, open-source developers and the rest of the world on board? Who should hold the brake: the labs themselves, national governments, the EU through the AI Act, or international treaties? And what does it mean for Europe and Croatia, which are not the ones setting the pace?
We will tackle these questions at the Day Zero event in a panel discussion held in Croatian, bringing together perspectives from EU policy, the technology industry and the humanities. The discussion is organised in cooperation with CroAI.
