The Meeting Place 001: Suchitra Mattai
The Meeting Place is a new platform for dialogue, cultural exchange, and community building, bringing together artists, thinkers, and cultural practitioners whose work engages with Guyana, its diaspora, and the broader global contemporary art landscape.
For our inaugural conversation, we are delighted to welcome Suchitra Mattai, an internationally acclaimed Guyanese-American contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary practice explores histories of migration, memory, mythology, and belonging. Her work has been featured in major international exhibitions, including the São Paulo Biennial and Sharjah Biennial, alongside significant presentations at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Art Gallery of Ontario, and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. She has also presented major solo exhibitions at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Seattle Asian Art Museum, and Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco, among other institutions.
Through painting, sculpture, installation, and textile-based works, Mattai draws upon personal and collective histories to reimagine inherited narratives and create new possibilities for understanding identity and cultural memory.
As the first installment of The Meeting Place, this conversation will explore Mattai's artistic practice, her relationship to Guyanese heritage, and the ways in which art can serve as a space for storytelling, connection, and cultural transformation.
The Meeting Place is a collaborative initiative presented by FineArt.gy and Umana Yana Strategies, dedicated to fostering meaningful conversations across geographic, generational, and disciplinary boundaries.
