There is a man in a grey trench coat sitting alone in a bare Paris apartment, listening to a caged bird sing. He checks his hat in the mirror. He leaves. Almost nothing has happened, and yet you cannot look away.

Jean-Pierre Melville's cold, luminous thriller strips crime cinema down to something close to ritual. Alain Delon plays Jef Costello, a contract killer who moves through the city like a ghost — precise, unhurried, utterly sealed off from the world around him. When a nightclub assassination leaves him exposed on two fronts, hunted by both the police and his own employers, the film never raises its voice. It simply tightens, breath by breath, around him.

Shot in desaturated blues and silences that say more than dialogue ever could, Le Samouraï understands loneliness as a kind of armour — and armour, eventually, as a kind of fate. Cool on the surface, devastating underneath. One of cinema's great portraits of a man already disappearing.
