​Eleven years after Le Quattro Volte, Frammartino descends into a new kind of cinema. Against the backdrop of Italy’s post-war economic boom, young explorers enter one of Europe’s deepest caves while an old shepherd tends his animals on the surface. Above and below, progress and tradition, light and darkness, gravity and the body answer one another without explanation. Cinematographer Renato Berta catches the explorers’ hope and fear in the smallest tremors of light. Winner of three prizes at the 78th Venice Film Festival, including the Special Jury Prize, Il Buco turns the act of descent into a vast, patient symphony of time.
