SpudCell: synthetic cell for redesigning biology

Abstract: Natural biology is messy and inefficient. We urgently need a better way for moving atoms in global economy, and to understand our own healthy and diseased cells. Yet we still have no blueprint for any natural cell. To gain full operational control of biology, we need to build life. Engineering cells from known components will give us the necessary knowledge, blueprint for how life works, and it will enable moving beyond the limits of natural biology. With bioengineering, we can build better healthcare, sustainable and equitable economy soon enough to matter, and expand the limits of our understanding of life.

Bio: Kate Adamala is McKnight Presidential Fellow Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota and co-founder of Biotic, a global non-profit supporting synthetic cell engineering. Her research focuses on synthetic cell engineering, with the aim of understanding chemical principles of biology, using artificial cells to create new tools for bioengineering, medicine, and foundational research. This work spans questions from the origin and earliest evolution of life, using bioengineering to colonize space, to the future of biotechnology and medicine. Kate is the leader of the BioBOLD Initiative, and co-founder and coordinator of the international synthetic cell engineering consortium Build-a-Cell. Lab info: protobiology.org.
