About Event

An experiential day in the forest to let go, decompose what needs to end, and grow what’s next from the parts.

For many of us, endings feel like failure, and letting go feels like loss. For others, endings feel like something happening to us: collapse arriving at speed while we brace for uncertain futures. Both come from the same disconnection: we've never learned to end things well.

Decomposition Day is an invitation to practise endings differently: not as failure, waste or collapse, but as the oldest method we have for returning value to ourselves, our work, and the living world we're part of.

Why now? In nature, death isn't the end of life; it's part of a regenerative cycle. We're obsessed with creating; terrible at ending. In 2025 we crossed seven of nine planetary boundaries. In 2026 Earth Overshoot Day landed in July, and the same growth-at-all-costs logic is stripping our time: highly productive, always behind, time-starved for someone else's gain.

So rather than asking what to create next, let's ask what needs to rot first.

What to expect.

A learning club Saturday social with good people, out in the woods. Together we'll learn from fungi, nature's hero decomposers. Go slow in nature, take a beat and re-orient. Meet mycelium. Embody a decomposer mushroom in meditation. Let something go in a rot ritual.

Then we'll learn a new method: Rot to Regenerate → Design through Decomposition. Play with mycelium materials, decompose something extractive, and ask: what remains, what rots?

You'll ease away with: Rot, reframed as transformation. A method to practise on Monday. A booklet, stickers and carabiner. A connection to others doing this work. And a mycelial gift to compost in your home 🍄‍🟫

Who is this for? Anyone feeling the limits of business-as-usual. Designers, strategists, futurists, solarpunks, sustainability leads, creatives, educators, world-builders, recovering corporate wizards. You share an intuition that the dominant model of growth is doing harm. You've got something you know needs to end, and you're ready for some fresh fun(gi) thinking.

Come and get your mushroom eyes on with us.

About your host

I'm Jess, a futurist, facilitator and decomposition strategist based between London and Cape Town. Foundress of Sporesight, an exploratory foresight practice and school of rot. You may know me from a past life as a global insight director, or from five years and 100+ interviews chasing fungi and the people building life-centric futures. Say hi on LinkedIn.

p.s. 17 October is my birthday so there will be cake!

Good to know:

  • Getting there: Highgate Woods is within reach of central London. Exact location and travel advice shared on signup.

  • Accessibility: We'll be in a natural landscape that requires walking. We'll do group work, with the option to find your own space at any time. Let us know of any accessibility needs when you book. We'd love to host wheelchair-accessible Decomposition Days — if that's you, email hello@sporesight.co.

  • Catering: We end in a private woodsy cabin at Queens Wood Cafe with a light vegan lunch, tea, coffee and birthday cake. As a tiny social enterprise we can't cover lunch for everyone, so spore ticket holders, please bring a light picnic.

  • What to bring: Notebook, pen, camera, walking shoes, waterproofs. Something you're willing to let go of (a habit, process, mindset or thing). No laptops.

  • Tickets: Sales cover the venue, materials and the time it takes to run. Sporesight is a social enterprise, so what's left after costs goes back into the mission. If money is the only thing standing between you and the day, reach out and we'll find a way.

  • Custom days: Every team is different. Tell us what you need and we'll shape something that fits your goals and budget.

  • Can I bring my kids? Younger minds would bring something brilliant, but sadly for insurance and safeguarding reasons I'm only able to host adults (18+) on this one 🍄

Also: mushroom snacks, and 8 Sporesight totes that need new homes - first come, first served.

Yours in spores,

Jess
