Open Langa: Open Streets
On Sunday, 25 October 2026, Open Langa returns for another year, bringing car-free streets, music, cycling, walking, games, community activities and local enterprise to King Langalibalele Drive and Lerotholi Avenue from 12:00 to 17:00.
Taking place on the final day of Design Week South Africa in Cape Town and during October Transport Month, Open Langa celebrates Langa's heritage, its communities and the importance of making streets safer and more accessible for everyone.
The event builds on the return of Open Streets to Langa in 2025, following several years without the programme. It also continues a much longer history of community-led public-space activities in Langa, where residents have demonstrated how streets can support walking, cycling, socialising, cultural expression and local businesses.
Open Langa is led by Langa Bicycle Hub, whose work in cycling, community mobility and local organising has been central to bringing Open Streets back to the neighbourhood. Through the leadership of the Hub and its network of community organisations, local businesses and partners, the programme continues to show what can happen when residents take an active role in shaping their streets.
The 2026 event follows the Open Langa and Bree Street pedestrian experiments undertaken with the City of Cape Town and Young Urbanists. Later in the 2026/27 summer season, regular Open Streets experiments are planned to return to both Lerotholi Avenue in Langa and Bree Street in Cape Town's inner city, continuing to test how temporary vehicle restrictions can support safer movement, community activities and local economic opportunities.
If you want to cycle there, you can join a BikeBus organised by AMF that will leave town from 11:30 from A33 via Obs to Open Langa and back.
Everyone is invited to join Open Langa, whether on foot, by bicycle, skateboard, wheelchair or with a pram, and experience the streets as shared public spaces.
