Stairymail Club: A Mail Club Where We Read

​In these eight weeks, we will be meeting an hour every Sunday to discuss chapter by chapter the book Indifference.

​Why do we protect animals? Most people say: “Because they can’t speak for themselves.”

​In Indifference, anthropologist Naisargi N. Davé tears down this exact myth through the real-world history of animal protection in India. Animals are not innocent, and they are not silent. To view them as mute victims only reinforces human superiority.

​Beyond exposing why animal activism often feels preachy or out-of-touch, Davé offers a radical alternative. She introduces a new way to listen—one that moves past human projection and demands we pay attention to animal presence, noise, and boundary-pushing as they actually are. It is an invitation to stop speaking for animals, and start learning how to truly listen to them.
