Advancing an African Partnership for Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Research, Development, and Demonstration
Africa is experiencing escalating ocean‑climate impacts, while also possessing the scientific, ecological, and institutional assets that position it to play a leading role in advancing marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR), a suite of emerging approaches that enhance the ocean’s natural capacity to remove atmospheric CO₂ and store it durably. Across the continent, academic institutions, governments, and regional organizations increasingly recognize the need for Africa to proactively shape the research, governance, and investment agenda for mCDR so that it aligns with the continent’s environmental realities, development priorities, and equity considerations.
This workshop brings together institutions developing an Africa mCDR Road Map and emerging African mCDR Partnership as a proposed continental mechanism to support an Africa-led agenda for responsible mCDR research, development, and demonstration (RD&D). The session will include an overview of the Africa mCDR Road Map and a panel discussion on Road Map priorities and Partnership design. The event will also create a space for regional and institutional partners to discuss how to operationalize the Road Map and Partnership. Dialogue will focus on how national governments, research institutions, regional bodies, and civil society organizations can contribute to moving from strategy to implementation.
