Celtic Club Library Official Opening
The Celtic Club is proud to announce the official opening by the Club President, Professor Ronan McDonald, of the Celtic Club Library on Tuesday, 17 November at 5.30 pm. All members and friends welcome!
This is a unique, niche, free circulating library of Irish and Irish-Australian books, built entirely from donations and with volunteer labour. It has been fortunate in having professional Librarians working on it over several decades. It contains unique treasures.
The Cultural Heritage Working Party (CHWP), led by Peter Gavin, views the Library as an important amenity for members. It has established a volunteer group, Friends of the Celtic Club Library (FCCL), to staff it, minister to the reading needs of members, circulate books, and continue its work doing the various Library maintenance jobs that are necessary.
The books are now shelved in Dewey order in the delightful room off the Members’ bar that has been furnished for the pleasure of readers and small book groups, and other small-scale meetings. The Library will open for circulating books on 17 November. We plan to staff the library with volunteers and hopes these volunteer Friends of the Celtic Club will be conducive to building a community at the Club, between the Club and book lovers, and welcomes new volunteers to the group. The work is light and the culture congenial.
The modest aim at this stage to work in pairs as volunteers on the first and third Tuesdays and the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 1.30 -3.30 pm. We will extend the hours if there is a call for it from members, and if we can assemble a sufficiently large group of Volunteer FCCL. The big group of avid readers and well-informed Friends who shelved the Library found books they wanted to read, and hope Members will appreciate this niche, newly refurbished , free (to members) circulating Library.
