Freezestylin' - Open Registration
Creativity isn’t limited to our abilities to paint a nice picture or dance in the coolest way — it’s the skill underlying innovation. Fundamentally, it is the ability to build something out of nothing, whether that thing is a product or a business or a song you sing in the shower.
You’ll leave this event with quicker and easier access to your creative prowess — which you can channel directly into any part of your life in need of creative problem solving.

This night is designed for laughter and curiosity, not performing or being "good" at art.
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” - Picasso
As children, all of us knew how to sing and dance and draw without worrying about whether it was good enough. As we grow up, most of us learn to censor our own creative impulses, only building when we are confident we can create something good. In doing so, we block ourselves off from our own creative abilities, and lose out on our grandest ideas and innovations.
Tonight, we’ll use the voice as our medium to train our long-unused creative muscles. We’ll start gently. Although all of us knew as children how to sing and dance like no one’s watching, most of us have now learned that we have to be good at creativity in order to be comfortable accessing it. Through wordplay, rhythm, and singing games, we’ll slowly open to the possibility that we can create badly (and to the fun that ensues) — which, counterintuitively, unblocks more access to our creativity and our ability to create well.
This is not built for professional artists — this event is for people who are excited about the idea of having more access to creative thinking in their day-to-day lives, and who are open to (and probably also intimidated by) the idea of rapping or singing as part of structured games in a group of amateurs.
“Remember, before you can be great, you’ve got to be good. Before you can be good, you’ve got to be bad. But before you can even be bad, you’ve got to try.” - Art Williams
Everything we offer at this event will be opt-in. We will never make you get up on stage in front of everyone — we’ll never push you to doing any part of this that you don’t want to do. This night is for you, and we are in full support of your choices about how you’d like to participate.
Our facilitation team has been running this event for over four years, and they expertly hold both the joy and the fear that people often feel around creative expression.
Agenda
Settling in & short introduction to creative access as a trainable skill
Individual freestyle word-play games — no one will be listening to you
Group-based low-stakes voice and rhythm games — focused on the joy of what’s created, whether good or terrible
Group-based singing games — sweet, gentle, and facilitated by our team to support you in participating to exactly whatever extent you’d like to
Open-ended time to hang out and join or listen to a jam session
Logistics
There are limited spots at this event, and we will not take walk-ins if it sells out — we have a specific cap on attendance so that we can accommodate breakout groups with our facilitation team
You may want a water bottle; no need to bring anything else
Please arrive on time and plan to stay for the duration of the event; the evening is a full arc where each activity builds on the previous one

About the Facilitators
Jeff Lieberman received four degrees at MIT (Physics, Math, Mech E and Robotics). He hosted “Time Warp” on the Discovery Channel about the wonders of science, and made large-scale art for 15 years.
He marvels at the fact that we can measure the external universe to 10-decimal accuracy, but most of us don’t learn about our insides: our emotions, what leads to flourishing, how to take great care of ourselves. Years of personal exploration transformed him, leading to a determination to not have the road to joy be difficult for others to find.
He has spent the last 15 years training in meditation, personal development, and group dynamics for well being. He speaks around the world on the topics of art, science, education, healing, and consciousness. See more of his artwork at bea.st.
Sarah Cruse found poetry and discovered the healing power of embodied truth, authentic voice and creative expression as a young, depressed adult. Through spoken word, theater, singing, and sound exploration, she learned how to access her creative flow. Sarah now supports people and communities in activating their own inner creative pathways. She is currently the lead singer of her band Yaya’s Kitchen and a lead facilitator at Sleepawake.
About Sleepawake
Our facilitator team weaves dozens of lineages of practice including Byron Katie’s The Work, Peter Levine’s Somatic Experiencing, Alexander Lowen’s Bioenergetics, Integral Theory, as well as a deep appreciation of the evolution of consciousness and the sources of human suffering and joy. Our work evolved into a residential experience called Sleepawake, where participants immerse themselves into utterly new ways of being — some call it “How to Human”.
