Tech Interviews in the Age of AI
About the session: AI tools are changing how engineers prepare for interviews and how some employers assess candidates. Coding challenges remain common, while applicant tracking systems, AI-assisted assessments, and follow-up discussions may also shape a hiring process.
This Global Tech Sailors session brings a tech recruiter’s perspective to backend and API interviews. A practical API answer will anchor the discussion: what hiring teams learn beyond whether a solution works, where AI helps preparation, and how candidates can demonstrate their own reasoning.
The conversation is intended for junior, mid-level, and senior engineers. The speaker will distinguish recruiter screening from technical evaluation and explain that practices differ among employers.
What you'll learn:
Understand how screening can combine coding platforms such as Codility, ATS keyword matching, and AI-assisted assessments.
Recognize how a backend or API answer may be evaluated beyond “does it work?”
Identify appropriate uses of AI for preparation and behaviours that can raise concerns
Show independent reasoning while following an employer’s rules for AI use
Who Should Attend:
Junior engineers preparing for technical interviews
Mid-level engineers seeking to explain design choices and trade-offs
Senior engineers preparing to show system thinking and decision-making
Software engineers working with backend services and APIs
Facilitator: Nimrod Kimani brings nine years of recruitment experience across agency, in-house, and independent settings, hiring for engineering, technology, and leadership roles across Africa and beyond. He offers an insider’s view of how candidates are screened, assessed, and selected, helping engineers understand what recruiters look for and approach interviews with greater clarity and confidence.
