Deep Blue: Financing the Future of Ocean Conservation
Rare will host an evening reception at the CBD COP17 Ocean Pavilion exploring a simple question: How can we move more money to ocean conservation and pay for the results that matter?
The reception will introduce guests to Deep Blue, an outcomes-financing platform developed by Rare in partnership with ORRAA and Levoca. Deep Blue is designed to help governments, philanthropies and companies pay for measurable, independently verified ocean outcomes, creating the certainty needed to unlock upfront capital for conservation.
The approach is already being tested in the water. Rare's Small-Scale Fisheries Impact Bond in Indonesia mobilized $2.1 million in upfront investment against up to $6 million in outcome funding to support community-led fisheries management and conservation. Deep Blue is designed to build on that experience and make outcomes-based finance available to more ocean projects and communities around the world.
The evening will be an opportunity to connect with ocean funders, governments and practitioners. A brief program midway through the reception will introduce Deep Blue and share lessons from implementing outcomes-based finance with coastal communities in Indonesia, bringing the model to life through the people and places behind it.
