Join us for a baithak with Sougata Roy Chowdhury on sarod, with Sudhakar Vaidyanathan on tabla.
Baithaks — literally “seat” or “place to sit” — are informal Indian classical music performances in intimate living-room type spaces, fostering direct interaction and a communal experience.
The space will be open 4pm onwards with non-alcoholic cocktails and tea for sale. Music starts at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased beforehand on Luma, or at the door.
About Sougata Roy Chowdhury
Sougata Roy Chowdhury, a distinguished Sarod performer and teacher, is celebrated as one of the most gifted musicians of his generation. Honored with the prestigious Aga Khan Music Awards in 2019, Sougata was born into a family deeply rooted in Bengali artistic traditions. His upbringing in Santiniketan provided a rich cultural environment that nurtured his musical talents from a young age. His father, Prof. Sarbari Roy Chowdhury, a celebrated sculptor and music aficionado, possessed one of the most extensive collections of Indian classical music in the country, and mother, Srimati Ajanta Roy Chowdhury, a distinguished Indian classical vocalist from the Agra Gharana, further instilled in him a deep appreciation for classical music.
About Sudhakar Vaidyanathan
Sudhakar Vaidyanathan began his training in tabla under Shri Satish Tare at the age of 8. He has been continuing his training with Padma Shri Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri for the past 10+ years. He is a well established accompanist and soloist in the Bay Area. He has had the fortune of performing at many prestigious venues and festivals such as Davies Symphony Hall (San Francisco), BRM Ragas Live Festival, Festival of Tabla, and is a regular performer at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, CA and across the Bay Area. He has also collaborated closely with the Chitresh Das Institute, playing multiple shows with their dance company across America.
