Protein LECTURE with Elijah: What Can Artists Learn From Pro Wrestling?
Join us on 8th October for our second Protein LECTURE. Led by writer and DJ Elijah, it will discuss the power of character, why artists are obsessed with 'authenticity', and the wisdom of pro wrestling.
In the social era, artists have been pushed to represent an idea that few challenge: 'authenticity'. As we've become closer to the processes and personalities of artists, has this resulted in more interesting art? Sometimes, sure. But I'd argue that we've pulled the curtain too far back, and more artists should embrace the pro wrestling idea of kayfabe: a commitment to a character, and idea that while in public view, they enhance the presentation of this character.
Over the last 18 months, I've been writing about what makes pro wrestling a special medium in this particular era, and what artists could learn from the way they tell stories. I'm in the valley of despair trying to finish a 'book' on this. This LECTURE will present some of the ideas I've been working on for it, and encourage a light hearted discussion about them. You don't have to know or understand wrestling for this talk!
