The panel will explore the role practicing ethnographers can play within service design, how to identify service design opportunities, among other topics.

Moderator: Nicole Laborde
A cultural anthropologist, Nicole brings over 20 years of research experience in international and domestic settings, often among vulnerable populations and on uncomfortable topics. She sees ethnography, empathy and storytelling as central to her work, and has a talent for respectfully eliciting stories and making meaning out of experiences. Out of the office, she loves thrift shopping with her daughters, practices karate, and cares for too many pets.
Panelist: Sylvia Bargellini
Sylvia is a leader of the SDN SF/Bay Area community! She is also a creator of innovative human-centric products and services that enhance process efficiencies, user experiences, and profits by identifying unique creative business opportunities and guiding interdisciplinary teams. She has 15+ years of industry knowledge, with deep expertise in service design, human factors, industrial design, and research.
Panelist: Jeffrey Greger
Jeffrey is a Service Designer and Researcher with a background in anthropology and Industrial Design. He has spent the past decade identifying and creatively busting the many barriers low-income people encounter when trying to access social and financial services. As a user experience researcher at Varo Bank, he sought to ground the company’s product and branding strategy in an understanding of the financial and emotional needs of people living paycheck to paycheck. Drawing upon my academic research on the ethical and organizational challenges facing financial inclusion professionals, I started PeopleFirst, Varo’s social responsibility working group.
Panelist: Marise Phillips
Marise leads service design at Sutherland Labs, bringing together ethnographic research, participatory design, and collaborative methods to understand and shape complex human experiences. Over her career, she has led design research, service design, and experience strategy work across technology, retail, travel, and financial services. Alongside her professional practice, Marise is pursuing postgraduate study in Fine Art at Falmouth University UK, where her socially engaged art practice explores hospitality, circular systems, and stewardship.
Panelist: Bethany Polentz
Bethany is a Service Designer/Experience Strategist, having worked across the spectrum of Wells Fargo wholesale banking journeys and customer segments from emerging middle market clients through corporate and investment banking. She began her career in UX as a web producer in e-commerce and healthcare EMR (Electronic Medical Record) design, and crossed the threshold into service design orchestrating publishing process improvements via journey mapping during a high-profile corporate merger. Leader of the Bay Area Facilitation Lab, and also SDN SF/Bay Area.
