About Event

Every cell in your body runs a hyper-complex logistical network. Tens of thousands of tiny membrane-enveloped packages—called vesicles—ferry critical cargo like insulin, hormones, and neurotransmitters to precise destinations. If this delivery system delays by even a millisecond, or drops its cargo in the wrong place, the result is devastating human disease: diabetes, neurological disorders, and immune system failures.

Understanding how cells manage this trafficking didn’t just rewrite biology textbooks—it won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Medicine.

But fundamental science is only half the journey. The real magic happens when world-changing research successfully leaves the academic lab to hit the commercial market.

Few people have bridged this gap like Professor James Rothman, Ph.D. Originally trained in physics at Yale before pivoting to biochemistry at Harvard, Professor Rothman looks at biology through the lens of fundamental mechanics. Today, he is the Sterling Professor of Cell Biology and the Director and Founder of the Yale Nanobiology Institute, where researchers merge the physical sciences with engineering to study living systems at the nanoscale.

Beyond academia, Professor Rothman is a veteran biotech founder, life science industry executive, and venture advisor. From founding ARIAD Pharmaceuticals to guiding deep-tech bio platforms like Prellis Biologics and advising firms like Celesta Capital and Arsenal, his career represents the ultimate "bench-to-boardroom" trajectory.

In this exclusive fireside chat with SOSV Managing Partner Sean O’Sullivan, Professor Rothman will explore:

  • The Cellular Supply Chain: What his Nobel-winning discovery of SNARE proteins teaches us about the ultimate "machinery" of life—and how understanding these pathways allows us to block viral entry and combat infectious diseases.

  • The Nanobiology Era: Why human health tech is shifting away from incremental chemistry toward engineering and programming life at the molecular scale.

  • The Translation Chasm: The raw realities of moving breakthroughs from elite university benches to commercial boardrooms.

  • Platform vs. Product: Lessons from building scalable biotherapeutics platforms (like Prellis's bioprinted human immune systems) versus single-drug assets.

  • The Future of Investment: What the next generation of venture capitalists and founders must understand to accurately de-risk deep tech biology.
