​Nearly 30 years before Richard Attenborough's Gandhi swept the Oscars, there was this: the first-ever documentary made about Gandhi's life.

​Tamil journalist and filmmaker A.K. Chettiar began the project in 1937, spending years tracking down archival footage shot by over 200 cameramen across India, England, and South Africa — assembling a portrait of Gandhi built entirely from real, contemporaneous film rather than dramatic reconstruction.
