About Event

Join the Mt. Adams PBA for a small burn just outside of Trout Lake, WA. We'll be burning a 2-acre unit of ponderosa pine and mixed conifer that the PBA prepped last fall.

Who:

Anyone is welcome! You do not need to have any prescribed fire qualifications or official training to come out to this burn.

What to expect:

We will begin the day with a brief introduction to the property and the plan for our burn. Participants should then expect to be assigned to either an observational role or a role on the fire based on people’s experience levels and day-of burn conditions. Those roles could include helping light the interior of the burn unit or being part of the holding team, which often helps create blackline around the edges of the unit and/or monitors the unit boundary. We will provide basic introductions to these roles before beginning. We will all burn together in these teams, following the leadership of our burn manager. Then we will all work on burn mop up, to create a buffer of no heat or smoke at the edges of the the burn units.

What to bring:

Food will be provided by the landowner at the end of our day; please bring adequate food and water (2-3 quarts at least) to last you through burning and mop up, which could continue until mid-afternoon.

Nomex/fire-resistant clothing is not required. Participants should wear a non-synthetic shirt (cotton and wool work great), non-synthetic pants (thicker is good, jeans ok), and leather boots, preferably not with a steel toe. We also require leather gloves, a helmet, and eye protection and can loan out any of those three items if you need to borrow them (just tell us what you need via the questions below!)

Driving/parking instructions:

From White Salmon, drive north on Highway 141 for about 18 miles. Take a right on Warner Road, then take your first left on Little Mountain Road. Drive about 2 miles until you see a covered bridge on your right - this is our burn location! Drive across the bridge and follow the driveway back to a parking area near the barn.
