Tbilisi: A Journey Through Architectural Time

​This tour of Tbilisi's architecture encompasses the different architectural styles of the city that shaped its unique history, culture and urban development.

The tour starts in front of Mzechabuki, near Tbilisi Sports Palace and covers the exteriors of some of the famous Soviet constructions.

Next on the tour moves downwards to discuss the architecture of Tbilisi Technical University that will be followed by the former office of Public TV and Radio Broadcaster.

The tour continues to Heroes' Square where the Circus was built in 1934 followed by the first 'skyscraper' in 1939.

Next on the path follows up to Kostava avenue. and passes the buildings of the former ministry of agriculture and the technical library, where the architecture dramatically blends with the late 1800s.

The era of soviet modernism is perfectly expressed in the construction of Tbilisi Concert Hall that divides Vera district in two sides. Some examples of neo-gothic architecture show up on the go.

The tour continues to explore the Stamba hotel commonly known as former Soviet publishing house. This building is the perfect example of modern solution for the outdated soviet constructions.

Next on the tour takes place to Rustaveli metro station, comparing the exteriors of Melik-Azariants' revenue house and Stalin-period Academy of Science.

Traveling one stop with metro and leaving from Liberty Square station, where the tour continues towards the old town. The eclectic appearance of the Municipality House in its iconic Moorish style creates a contrast with nearby neoclassic facades.

The tour continues towards Gudiashvili park where different architectural styles coexist around the same square. It's also possible to look into one of the houses' interiors to observe its change through different times.
