Bike Tour: DC’s Evolving Bike Infrastructure
Please note: registration is required to join this tour as space is limited.
Washington, D.C.’s bike infrastructure is among the top 10 in the U.S. Over the past decade, the city’s innovative network has been designed by public and private planners, engineers, and landscape architects.
Join us for a dynamic two-hour bike tour to learn about the key phases of DC’s bike infrastructure and how it advances climate action, improves safety, and supports physical and mental health and well-being.
Discover first-hand how bikeway design affects user experience. Learn about the complexities of building bikeways on urban streets. The tour will explain the evolution of DC’s bike infrastructure and how it has been designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve safety, and equitably increase access to sustainable transportation and recreation in the District.
The ride will be led by Jennifer Toole, FASLA, AICP, President, Toole Design; Greg Billing, Bikeways Branch Manager, District Department of Transportation; and Mike Goodno, Transportation Planner, District Department of Transportation.
The bike tour route is an 8-mile loop, including key corridors of 9th Street NW, Pennsylvania Avenue NW, 1st Street NE, the Metropolitan Branch Trail, and Irving Street NW.

Additional Information:
Prior to departure, the group will hear about the route we will take and organizers will provide a safety overview. Participants will be required to sign a release form on-site prior to the ride.
Most of the route is on protected bike lanes and trails. However there are short stretches where you must share the road with cars. If you aren't comfortable with that, you can walk your bike on the sidewalk.
