We spend way too much of our marketing energy ricocheting between two bad ideas: cast a massive net or niche down until you disappear. “Niche” makes people think they’re supposed to narrow themselves into a demographic box and ignore everyone else who doesn’t fit the avatar.

I don’t buy it.

I don’t worry about a niche in the traditional sense. I focus on the people who naturally lean in when I talk—people who see themselves in my stories, my values, my mission. Some will resonate. Some won’t. That’s the entire point.

The 1000 True Fans idea is simple: you don’t need millions of followers. You need a small group of people who genuinely feel what you’re doing. The internet gives every one of us access to enough of those people to build a real business—one that’s both sustainable and fulfilling.

The “1000” is just math. If 1000 people find enough value in what you offer to spend $100 a year with you, that’s $100K in revenue. Adjust the numbers however you want. The point is to stop broadcasting to everyone and start serving the people who vibe with you.

That’s the experiment I’m in right now. I’m still weaning myself off the dopamine drip of likes and impressions. But I’m convinced of this: the more I show up as my actual, authentic self, the more the right people will show up, too.
