Sidewalk Studies
A photowalk through Chinatown, framing everyday stories hiding in plain sight.
This walk will treat Chinatown as an unfolding image—where gestures, objects, and encounters accumulate into something worth noticing. Working with the camera you already have, we’ll move through the neighborhood giving attention to what reveals itself over time. The aim is to approach photography as a way of seeing: responsive, intuitive, and open to surprise.
Program
We’ll begin with a brief meet & greet at the Index home office in Chinatown, giving everyone a chance to connect before heading out. The group will be introduced to some loose prompts to get the creative juices flowing before the walk. From there, we’ll move through Chinatown together, following the pace of the street and allowing space for individual exploration and image-making along the way. We’ll return to the office in the early afternoon to regroup, share a selection of images, and reflect on what we saw and captured over some fresh tea.

Facilitator Bio
Suzie Maez is a New York-based iPhone photographer who uses her camera to frame the stories that exist in the mundane. Daring to capture what often goes overlooked, her singular vision makes the strange familiar and the familiar strange again. Between her prolific street photography and carefully scored micro films, Suzie pushes the boundaries of the medium through visual and thematic experimentation. In this sense, various processes of image distortion are deeply embedded in her art. As seen in her recent publication, Gorgeous and Guilty, Suzie finds catharsis in storytelling through the juxtaposition of images whose unlikely pairings form small narratives, often to a humorous end. She warmly welcomes viewers into her world of collected moments to share the stories that shape the everyday.
