​Schmidt Sciences and the AI safety priorities shaping the field

​James Fox is a Senior Science Associate at Schmidt Sciences, where he leads the Science of Trustworthy AI program and supports the broader mission of the AI and Advanced Computing Institute.

​Prior to joining Schmidt Sciences, James served as Research Director of the London Initiative for Safe AI (LISA), an AI safety research centre in London that houses academic, industry, and non-profit researchers across multiple organisations and programs. He earned his DPhil in Computer Science from the University of Oxford, where he worked on technical AI safety, supervised by Tom Everitt (Google DeepMind) and Michael Wooldridge & Alessandro Abate (University of Oxford). His research has mainly focused on game theory, causality, and reinforcement learning.

​His talk gives an overview of Schmidt Sciences' work and current focus areas and the specific AI safety priorities they are pursuing, with time for Q&A, foundational context for participants who are new to the field.
