About Event

Celebrate the launch of Gowanus Yearbook and join us for a yearbook signing party!

Gowanus is changing fast, and there's a lot to honor here: the folks who've spent decades in this neighborhood, and the people who are just joining the community. Gowanus Yearbook is a participatory archive of the people who make Gowanus what it is — hosted at Van Alen Institute since February 2025 and growing.

If you've had your photo taken by us, come see yourself in the archive. If you haven't, come join in! Meet your neighbors, dance to tunes from DJ WHERETO NOW, grab a snack, and celebrate Gowanus with us.

About Gowanus Yearbook

Gowanus Yearbook is a living portrait of Gowanus. The project invites neighborhood residents to be photographed, mark their photos with the year they arrived or were born in Gowanus, and draw a symbol answering the prompt: “What makes Gowanus Gowanus?”

The project team has collected portraits at community events held at Van Alen Institute, NYCHA’s Gowanus Houses Community Center, and Wild East Brewing Co. To date, more than 50 portraits have been collected.

Gowanus Yearbook is created by Rida Chaudhry, Ananaya Singh, and Kaye Yuvallos.
