Lecture Performance by baitong~bureaux (Tongkwai L.)
Across time, sound has travelled between climate, history, and even geo-political environments. How can tracing the currents of sound assist us in grasping our reality?
In this session, baitong~bureaux, an investigative extension of sonic artist baitong~xystems (Tongkwai L.), will present an elegiac lecture-performance and listening session that examines the doomed geologies of audio countercurrents across Thailand as it lurks in the shadows of the cold war, economic collapse, and geopolitical superstitions. Stitching historical fragments, ancient maps, and tropical climate philosophy, baitong~bureaux revisit personal and work archives, notes and findings to propose alternative ways of hearing.
The performance will be followed by an open floor artist conversation.
About the Artist
Tongkwai L. / baitong˜xystems is a multimedia artist from Bangkok. A former classical musician, she holds a BA in History of Art from UCL and an MFA in Design & Technology from Parsons School of Design.
Rooted in identity crises, she uses tropical phantasmagoria as a philosophy to confront cross-cultural tensions and shifts in local subcultures. Her praxis spans performance, film scores, experimental soundscapes, interactive installations, visual design and writing.
She has both showcased work and performed at MoMa Ps1, Bangkok City City Gallery, Zeppelin Museum, Tonson Gallery, BACC, BEFF 2025, and Ghost 2568. Her piece กาพย์กรุงธน is currently featured in John Giorno's Dial-a-Poem Thailand extension at Bangkok Kunsthalle.
Fresh off a solo performance at Music Project, Bangkok City City Gallery (2026), she is currently preparing for an audio release later this fall.
This workshop is presented as part of Codependent Curricular Activities, an artist takeover programme presented and produced by ToNewEntities, and curated by Rafi Abdullah. The programme is supported by the National Arts Council's Arts x Tech Lab initiative. The Lab nurtures Singapore's arts x tech community, driving new artistic endeavours and bridging arts and technology conversations to develop Singapore's vibrant arts scene.
