One App, Different Roles: Control What Each User Can See and Access
One app can have many different people using it, but not everyone should have the same permissions. The answer isn’t separate apps; it’s giving everyone a role and deciding what that role is allowed to see and do. This is called Role Based Access Control (RBAC) and in this workshop we’ll explore how to architect it securely.
What we're building
In this hands-on Bolt.new Premium Customer Workshop, we'll build a Client Portal for a web design agency, where three people open the same app and each one gets a different view of it.
The Admin sees everything, including all the client info and project files, and decides who has access. A team member works only on the projects they've been assigned. A client sees only their own project with progress, files, and invoices.
We'll write each of those permissions into the database, so the app checks who's asking before it hands anything over.
Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, you'll understand:
How to give everyone in your app a role: such as Admin, team member or client, and decide what each one is allowed to see and do
How to add a new client and assign them to the correct role
How to test the app by signing in as each type of user before you hand the portal over
How to ask for all of this in plain English, and what to say when the agent gets it wrong
