An UNMUTED Dialogue: Breaking Up Big Tech?
Should We Break Up Big Tech?
Tim Wu vs. Allison Schrager | Moderated by Kate Farmer, The Wall Street Journal
Big Tech companies have reshaped the American economy. Are they innovating or extracting? Should the government break them up, regulate them, or leave them alone?
Professor Tim Wu of Columbia Law School coined the term "net neutrality" and served as the White House's top advisor on technology and competition policy under President Biden. He says dominant platforms have become instruments of wealth extraction and need to be broken up. Dr. Allison Schrager, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and economist specializing in risk and regulation, argues that government intervention will do more harm than good. Wall Street Journal reporter Kate Farmer moderates.
The evening includes a structured debate, audience Q&A with both speakers, small group discussions, and a book signing with Tim Wu, who will be signing copies of his new book, The Age of Extraction: How Tech Platforms Conquered the Economy and Threaten Our Future Prosperity. Drinks and conversation to follow.
