What happens when your first act is already legendary and you’re still hungry for more? What if your greatest impact is still ahead of you?
Bill Stephney and Justin Brannan have lived wildly successful, nontraditional careers—spanning music, media, politics, and culture. Bill was the founder of the hip hop group Public Enemy, and the President of Def Jam Records. Justin was the lead guitarist for hardcore punk bands “Most Precious Blood” and “Indecision” and is now a NYC Council Member.
From building foundational moments in hip hop and hardcore punk to influencing city budgets and national conversations, they’ve never done just one thing - and they’ve never done it the usual way.
On May 28th, we’re bringing them together for a raw and powerful conversation about what comes after success: how you reinvent, where you find purpose, and what it takes to keep evolving—especially when your path doesn’t follow the traditional rules of what a career is supposed to look like.
This Chapter Two evening includes:
A fireside chat with Bill & Justin that gets to the real story
A “Help a Punk” break out group session that will challenge professional norms and invite real conversation
A community of peers who aren’t chasing titles—they’re building meaningful second acts
Wine, light bites, and a laid-back setting at The Garage by Microsoft, the place for “doers, not talkers”
Guest Bios:
Bill Stephney – From Public Enemy to Public Policy
Founding force behind Public Enemy and former President of Def Jam Records, now the Principal Executive for Broad Market Media
Produced everyone from Vanessa Williams to Paul Mooney
Co-created a Comedy Central talent program that launched Donald Glover
Curated the Smithsonian Anthology of Hip Hop and Rap
Chaired a Civil Rights committee and still reps the Knicks harder than Spike
Still shaping culture—just with more policy briefs than turntables
Built hip hop’s foundation. Still not done building.
Justin Brannan – From Hardcore to City Hall
Now a NYC Council Member and frontrunner for Comptroller of NYC
Former guitarist for Indecision and Most Precious Blood—bands known for riffs, rage, and righteous causes
Once toured 9 months a year in a van held together by duct tape and adrenaline
Founded a deathgrind band featuring dogs as vocalists (yes, really)
Still writes riffs, just mostly for city budgets now
Lifelong vegetarian, animal welfare advocate, and anti-BS policymaker
Hardcore never died. It just put on a blazer.
This event is part of the Punks & Pinstripes Chapter Two series. A series of conversations with incredible artists, entrepreneurs, musicians and business leaders who reached the mountaintop of success, left, and started their next chapter.
Who are the Punks of Punks & Pinstripes?
Most executive communities are for people trying to achieve society’s definition of success. Punks & Pinstripes is for those who’ve already been there and chose something more.
We’re an executive community for people on the Second Mountaintop of their careers. Meaning we’ve achieved objectively impressive success (huge exits, prestigious job titles, and recognition) then we realized - it wasn’t enough.
Now, we’re climbing a different kind of mountain.
One where the work is more meaningful, the impact is deeper, and the fulfillment is real.
