About Event

What makes art valuable, and how does that value translate into support for the people who create it?

Sophie Barfod (Partner at Emergent Art Advisory, co-founder at Emergent Cultural Capital, independent curator and critic), joins Noah Landow (Founder and CEO at Macktez) for a look at the financial structures behind collecting, philanthropy, and artist support. Drawing on Sophie’s background as a curator and strategist, we’ll discuss new models for financing the arts ecosystem through models that seek to channel philanthropic capital into new creative work.

We’ll dive into the relationship between art’s financial and cultural value: where they differ, where they overlap, and how each shapes the way artists and their work are supported. As wealth and collections pass between generations, an estimated $992 billion in art and collectibles is expected to change hands over the next decade. Yet many collectors have no formal plan for their collections, raising questions about where these works will go.

We’ll explore how philanthropic capital can support living artists’ long-term careers by funding purchases of their work, expanding their presence in museums and exhibitions, and reinvesting proceeds from sales to support more artists. How can this cycle of giving strengthen the market for artists while enriching public cultural life? And what practical and ethical tensions arise when charitable goals, investment strategies, and institutional recognition intersect?

Join us at the Macktez office, after work, over light snacks and sips, for a thought-provoking discussion on how capital, philanthropy, and value intersect to shape the future of the arts.

A bit about Macktez, and why we host this series
Macktez is a technology consultancy collaborating with organizations going through dynamic change.

Our goal is to form a lasting partnership between our team and our clients, so we can anticipate their technology challenges and help them navigate growth, disruption, and other evolving conditions.

Each event in our Tête-à-Tech series is an opportunity to explore a specific cultural, scientific, historical, and personal issue. We fire at the synapses that connect each topic to other fields of interest and to our individual lives. And we do so in a comfortable environment to facilitate conversation that can be casual, surprising, and illuminating.
