CBD COP17 Driving Action for Coral Reef Resilience: Harnessing Science and Technology, Collaborative Coalitions, and Local Stewardship
Join us on 22 October at CBD COP17 Armenia in Yerevan, Armenia, as we explore ways to strengthen coral reef resilience through collective action.
🤝 Co-Hosts: Delta Environmental and Educational Foundation (DEEF) & Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) & International Coral Reef Society (ICRS)
📝 Event Overview: According to the latest Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) report, global coral bleaching events now occur every 5–6 years, making urgent, science-backed action essential to halt marine biodiversity loss. Aligning with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), this side event demonstrates how cross-sector partnerships unite ecological science, corporate engagement, and community action to build coral reef resilience.
Featuring insights from Dr. David Obura (Founding Director, CORDIO East Africa & IPBES Co-Chair), this session convenes diverse voices across science, coalitions, and enterprise. Discussions will span global marine baselines, community stewardship, and the Brazil Coral Coalition's experience in uniting multi-stakeholder coalitions from innovation to impact. Grounded in practice, DEEF will also highlight the world’s first marine STAR calibration in Kenting, demonstrating how corporate initiatives help drive verifiable, science-based ocean conservation.
💡 Key Highlights:
• Science-to-Action: Translating global marine assessments into actionable local stewardship
• Cross-Sector Coalitions: How private-sector engagement and multi-stakeholder partnerships scale reef resilience
• Empirical Calibration: Showcasing the world’s first marine STAR metric pilot in Kenting as a quantifiable framework for KMGBF implementation
