Hopeful Speculations Book Club: 1984

​Welcome to the second edition of the bimonthly Hopeful Speculations Book Club!

​A collaboration between The Climateverse and the Department of Imaginary Affairs, this is a community-building space to connect over speculative fiction and "read our way through the dark."

​Together we'll read everything from fantasy and sci fi to magical realism and even historical fiction, from diverse authors around the world, all grappling with questions of the futures we're hurtling towards, and how to chart our way to brighter possibilities.

​Next up is a classic: 1984 by George Orwell.

​"A masterpiece of rebellion and imprisonment where war is peace freedom is slavery and Big Brother is watching."

​This mirror of the present day is a timely reflection of the dangerous consequences of the slide towards totalitarianism.

​Content Warning:

​1984 contains themes of authoritarian control, surveillance, psychological manipulation, torture, imprisonment, and state-sanctioned violence. The novel includes depictions of emotional and physical abuse, loss of bodily autonomy, propaganda, censorship, and enforced conformity. There are also references to sexual repression, coercive relationships, and intense psychological distress.
