Beyond Voting: Fifth Ward Civic Engagement Photo Walk
The sisters of the yam Writing Society is partnering with Monti Hill, creative, photographer, and strategist, and the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) to open up a conversation about civic duty and what it means beyond the voting booth. Advocating for collective needs and holding institutions accountable matters and is an essential part of our civic duty.
Civic engagement is reciprocal. As we contribute to the well-being of our communities, we also strengthen our own sense of belonging. Join us for a guided photo walk through Houston’s historic Fifth Ward. Through photography, we’ll explore how civic participation extends beyond voting and the roles we play in shaping the social and political environments we inhabit.

Facilitator Bio:
Monti is a self-taught photographer specializing in realism and intentionality during moments of action, liberation, and stillness. She is in constant search of creative rebirth, using her skills as an organizer to build community connections. With a deep-rooted passion for capturing the essence of Black culture that transcends surface-level discussions, bringing in intersections of systems and liberation through the lens. Beyond photography, she fuels her creativity through cooking, painting, community discussions, learning, and staying curious about the possibility of creating new systems of change.
