How to learn with soil? Welcome to co-soiling workshop! During the workshop participants will explore sense-based, microbial, embodied and creative practices of being in dialogue with soil. We will try different methods of connecting to and collaborating with soil, that include using different senses and tools to observe soil, storytelling, co-creating and embodiment. The workshop takes place on Aalto Test-Site community garden on Wednesday May 27th at 17-19.
The workshop will be held by Creative Sustainability student Ronja Tammenpää as part of her Master’s thesis on urban soils, and is co-facilitated with soil scientist Sadia Suchi. Photos and video clips will be taken for documentation and research purposes and may be used for publication and exhibiting, similarly to all materials co-created in the workshop. In the beginning of the workshop we will confirm whether you want to be visible in photos or credited with your name.
PRE-TASK! Collect some soil from close to your home that wants to join co-soiling. You can find them in a ditch, park, flower pot, sidewalk… Soil is everywhere! Acknowledge you are collecting a living being. Take a picture of the soil’s home location.
Invasive species disclaimer: there is a risk of spreading the invasive Spanish slug (arion vulgaris) by moving soils from different areas. Check your soil not to have any visible white eggs in it. Yet, the whole capital region is affected by the species, thus, we don’t think the small amount of soils will pose a considerably high risk.
