Science Diplomacy: Innovation, Culture, and Global Cooperation

The upcoming event in San Francisco, hosted by OPEN AUSTRIA, will explore Science Diplomacy through the lens of innovation culture. The discussion on, “Innovation Culture – Culture & Innovation”, will convene experts from academia and entrepreneurship, illustrating how diverse ecosystems generate knowledge and channel it into societal value. The conversation will emphasize how cultural differences shape innovation practices—and how diplomacy grounded in science can transform these differences into synergies.

The event will also address AI and emerging technologies, which increasingly serve as both tools and subjects of diplomacy. By linking AI governance to broader innovation culture, science diplomacy can help establish international norms that safeguard human rights while stimulating creativity and growth. Leadership also plays a vital role. Mindful leadership approaches—rooted in resilience, empathy, and self-awareness—offer a human-centered complement to technological governance. They enable diplomats, scientists, and entrepreneurs to navigate complexity, mediate conflict, and inspire trust.

Ultimately, the discussion will argue that Science Diplomacy is not limited to crisis management or treaty negotiation. It is a proactive strategy for shaping the future of innovation, ensuring that global knowledge flows are open, inclusive, and oriented toward the common good.

Dr. Ludovit Garzik, author of "Successful Innovation Systems” (2021), Managing Director of InnovationOrbit (since 2015), and former Head of the Austrian Council for Research, Technology and Innovation (2005–2024), will be traveling to San Francisco from November 17–21 as part of his regular cooperation with the Silicon Valley innovation ecosystem.
