The Last Programmer - A Conversation About Who We Become
What is software engineering in the age of AI?
We were celebrated as the computer wizards, enjoying casting the magic spells that made the business world run. But now that the world is captivated by the AI genie that makes every software wish come true in the blink of an eye, what role do we play any more?
As crafting artisanal handmade code becomes a niche hobby, replaced by mass-produced ‘vibe code’ at a fraction of the cost, are we ready to grieve the death of programming? Or are we stuck in an infinite loop of "but it'll never replace me"?
Code was what we were good at, and what we enjoyed. It was our core dependency - the thing everything else in our careers was built on. As commercial realities steal that opportunity from us, who do we become? Do we refactor ourselves into something new, or are we being quietly deprecated - still in the codebase, but no longer called? If sleep(); is not an option, which branch do we take?
Join us for a very human discussion about the impact of AI on software developers. We don’t have all the answers, but we’re feeling brave enough to ask the questions you’ve been avoiding.
If you work in tech, build software, or wonder where all of this is heading, this conversation will be worth joining.
