ATXR: Austin's XR Industry Mastermind
Austin's AR & VR Mastermind is an open, community-driven gathering for anyone building, exploring, or deploying immersive technologies.
THIS MONTH: De-risking XR Through Game Design: Applying Jesse Schell's Framework to Spatial Product Development
XR products consistently hit adoption walls because teams ship without the design fundamentals that game studios refined decades ago. Drawing from Jesse Schell's "Art of Game Design," this talk demonstrates how XR teams can utilize established game design lenses to validate concepts more efficiently, reduce build risk, and deliver experiences that users actually return to. Attendees leave with a lens-based critique framework they can apply to their next XR product decision.
EJ Colina is a senior product designer based in Austin with 9 years in design, 4 in product, spanning B2B platforms, marketplaces, and gameplay systems. He studied game design, has shipped multiple games (including TRASH, 3rd place at PlayStation MetaHack 2023, built in PlayStation Dreams Engine), and mentors at the Indie Game Academy.
