Reading Group & Discussion: Toward an African Agenda for AI Safety
We'll be reading and discussing the paper: Toward an African Agenda for AI Safety
This paper directly address a common concern we've seen throughout our community: How AI impacts the Global South, and what Africa's role in shaping AI Governance is.
The paper lays out Africa's distinctive AI risks, from deepfake election interference and compute scarcity to labor disruption and environmental costs. It finds that only 26.8% of African states show concrete AI safety activity, and proposes a five-point action plan including establishing an African AI Safety Institute, building early warning systems for 25+ African languages, and creating an annual AU-level forum.
Session Structure:
18:00-18:45: silent group paper reading
18:45-19:30: group discussion
