The very nature of religion is rooted in the transcendence of being, to exert a moral principle and practice upon your own life, ultimately to make meaning in relation to the unknown. In this exhibition, How Do You Pray?, these artists explore their relationship with the transcendent within the frames of personal belief. With the normalization of religion into our American politics, many have forgotten the intimacy of lived experience through prayer, in whatever manner such an act manifests.
The exhibition reflects on prayer through storytelling, dialogue, and visualizations of the self to interrogate false Gods, superfluous displays of religious supremacy, and the specificity of moral ambiguity. The show calls on viewers to examine the political machine and the ways it has weaponized the tenets of Christianity to enable moral supremacy and political chaos, and how artists actively create works that directly respond to this growing mispractice with their own unique styles of belief.
The Alta Collective is partnering with Stella Rose at BothSidesNow also to launch their zine’s second issue, aptly titled “How Do You Pray?” The issue explores how individuals define and engage with the transcendent, however it is understood. By shifting the focus from doctrine to lived experience, prayer becomes a flexible and evolving language that reflects longing, gratitude, grief, and uncertainty across belief systems. Through reflection, storytelling, and dialogue, this collaboration seeks to expand what prayer can be and open space for a more nuanced understanding of faith, meaning, and connection.
